GroundTruth has been appointed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) to develop a plan for the rehabilitation of the freshwater ecosystems associated with Kingfisher Lake within the KZN National Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg.

The Kingfisher Lake Research Project is an initiative to monitor plant and dragonfly species assemblages in order to evaluate their responses and establish the success of the rehabilitation and habitat enhancement measures. A diversity of still and flowing water types and a variety of plant habitats will provide habitat to a multitude of animal and plant life.

Dragonflies, with various habitat niches and sensitivities, are being used as indicators of biodiversity and wetland and riparian health. The rehabilitation works aim to enhance the present habitat diversity.
